AEW Loses Former Women’s Champion as Mariah May Reportedly WWE-Bound

The wrestling world is buzzing with confirmation that another major star has parted ways with All Elite Wrestling. Mariah May, the former AEW Women’s World Champion, has officially been scrubbed from the company’s roster page, marking the end of her two-year journey with Tony Khan’s promotion.

The Hollywood Ending That Wasn’t

May’s AEW story reached its conclusion at Revolution in March, where she dropped the Women’s World Championship back to Toni Storm. The match was promoted as delivering a “Hollywood Ending” to their captivating feud that had defined both wrestlers’ recent storylines.

Following that defeat, May vanished from AEW programming entirely. Her absence sparked immediate speculation among wrestling insiders about her future, especially with whispers circulating about her contract status and potential interest from WWE.

From Protégé to Champion to Free Agent

May’s AEW tenure tells a classic wrestling story of mentorship gone wrong. She arrived in 2023 on a two-year deal, immediately positioning herself as Toni Storm’s eager student and ally.

The storyline evolved beautifully over months, building toward the inevitable betrayal. May’s heel turn culminated in championship gold when she defeated Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship at All In London in August 2024.

Her reign lasted until February’s Grand Slam Australia event, where Storm reclaimed the title. Storm now prepares to defend against Mercedes Moné at the upcoming All In Texas event on July 12.

WWE Sources Confirm Interest

According to PWInsider’s reporting, WWE sources have been buzzing about May’s availability throughout the past week. Multiple insiders suggest she’s expected to begin working with WWE “in the near future.”

This potential signing would represent another significant acquisition for WWE’s women’s division, which has been actively recruiting international talent and former AEW stars in recent months.

What This Means for Both Companies

May’s departure continues AEW’s pattern of losing established talent to WWE. Her unique character work and in-ring ability made her a standout performer during her championship run.

For WWE, landing May would add another versatile performer to their already stacked women’s roster. Her experience as both a face and heel, combined with her championship credentials, makes her an immediate asset.

With May officially gone from AEW and WWE sources confirming their interest, wrestling fans are left wondering which brand will benefit from her talents first – and whether other AEW stars might follow her lead to Stamford?
