Jim Ross Confirms His AEW Contract Is Set To Expire Soon

AEW commentator and Senior Advisor “Good Ole’ J.R.” Jim Ross, who signed with the company in April of 2019 and has been the voice of professional wrestling for over 40 years, revealed on his social media that he had been dealing with skin cancer issues for over a year. The WWE Hall of Famer then revealed prior to the end of 2021 that he has defeated cancer yet again and that he is now cancer free, but he still has to undergo radiation treatments until he is completely healed.

The legendary “Good Ole’ J.R.” Jim Ross recently made an appearance on the “JMart and Ramon” podcast, where he talked about how his AEW contract is set to expire soon, but he is not looking to work for a different promotion and even though he loves what he does and it is still fun for him, he is 70 years of age and he has to be realistic that at some point in his life he has to step away.

JR also talked about how at his age and being a widower his life is only occupied by a few things and broadcasting pro wrestling matches is one of those things as well as how AEW is a great company to be in due to Tony Khan being a genius.

This is what Jim Ross said:

“[AEW is] in a really cool spot, especially a guy like me. My contract is up soon. I’m not looking to go anywhere, but nonetheless, I’m 70. I have to be realistic at some point in my crazy a** life. I haven’t been. My late wife would say, ‘Amen to that. He’s a character.’ I’m loving what I’m doing. It’s still fun for me. As long as you keep that element in the place of work, you’re alright and doing good.”

“I can damn sure call a wrestling match because that’s what I love to do. At my age, I’m a widower, my life is occupied by only a small handful of things. One of them is broadcasting a pro wrestling match, as crazy as that sounds. It’s a great little company to be with, we’re growing exponentially, Tony Khan is a genius.”

Jim Ross also spoke about what it means to him to return to AEW television and continue his duties as an announcer after being diagnosed with skin cancer, but coming back from his condition.

This is what Jim Ross said:

“Every Wednesday night I get to relive my childhood.” “I appreciate it a lot more than I did in December, believe it or not.”

Jim Ross then spoke about how he doesn’t understand why Excalibur wears a mask while doing commentary but he respects Excalibur as he was told that is a huge deal for him and Excalibur is very bright and he does a great job.

This is what Jim Ross said:

“I don’t get it, I really don’t.” “When we were doing our first walkthrough I said ‘You work with a mask on?’ Somebody told me it was kind of a big deal, so okay I respect his gimmick but I don’t understand why he’s doing it. He’s very very bright, always the smartest guy in the room, and does a great job there but yeah, the mask, I don’t get it. But yanno, I don’t get getting up after two or three Tope El Suicida [dives]. There’s a difference in philosophy.”
