Khan Says WCW Failing Helped Them, AEW Not Yet Profitable

AEW is relatively still a new wrestling promotion as it was just launched in January of 2019. When it was just starting, Shahid Khan and Tony Khan took a huge risk by investing in the company as they had no idea how it would fare, but as time passed by, the promotion started growing, most especially with the live fans, their television ratings and their PPV buys. The biggest accomplishment to date is AEW getting a TV deal with TNT.

Hank Tucker of Forbes recently did an article on AEW President and CEO Tony Khan as well as on AEW on topics such as Khan not wanting AEW to be just another promotion WWE has vanquished over the years.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“I don’t want to be the next ‘blank’ wrestling company of the past—fill in the blank.” “We love wrestling of the past, wrestling of the present and wrestling of the future… That’s what gives us a great chance to retain and gain audience share.”

Khan also talked about how he doesn’t want AEW to dominate the business just like the WWE has done as the wrestling business has changed and it is hotter now than it was before, so there is no reason for there to only be one wrestling company.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“There’s no reason why there only needs to be one wrestling company.” “The wrestling business is hotter now than it’s been in a long time.”

Khan then talked about how WCW failing led to AEW succeeding.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“I’m glad that WCW failed because it created a vacancy for us to come in and succeed.” “But it made it a fairly bleak period for the wrestling business.”

Tony Khan launched All Elite Wrestling with his father, Shahid Khan’s investment of $100 million, and due to the company’s early success, they were able to land a $175 million deal with WarnerMedia which will last them four years, but Shahid Khan told Forbes he did not think AEW was a good idea at first, but since he knew he was leaving Tony and his sister a lot of money when he is gone, Shahid felt that they should just blow some of the money while he is still alive.

This is what Shahid Khan said:

“I absolutely didn’t think this was a good idea.” “But I told Tony, ‘Look, when I’m dead and gone, I’m going to be leaving you and your sister a lot of money. Why don’t you blow some of that while I’m alive?’”

AEW received an amount of $43.75 million from WarnerMedia in 2020 but as of right now, they are still in the red due to AEW investing eight-figures into the development of their video games, but Tony did say that he expects the promotion to be profitable this year as PPV numbers are increasing along with ticket sales as well as the revenue from the new TV deal AEW had with WarnerMedia for Rampage.
