News On If Forbidden Door Will Be Made An Annual Event

AEW will be holding their Forbidden Door PPV Event in partnership with NJPW next Sunday, June 26 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois and with the PPV just around the corner, the card is beginning to take shape. The main event of Forbidden Door will see Jon Moxley battle Hiroshi Tanahashi to crown the Interim AEW World Champion due to CM Punk being out of action from an injury.

All Elite Wrestling President and CEO Tony Khan recently had a conversation with ComicBook.com on how he booked the Forbidden Door card different to other AEW PPV Events and how he made it similar to one of Denzel Washington’s films.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“Yeah, I’ve likened it to ‘Crimson Tide’ where Denzel [Washington] gets a missile key.”

Tony Khan also talked about how he really likes working with NJPW and Gedo as well as how the working relationship between AEW and NJPW has been great for a really long time now, which started with a few AEW Stars going to NJPW, then a few NJPW Stars coming over to AEW.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“So, Gedo and I, generally anything that involves AEW & New Japan, I think we’re both going to have to agree on what the matchup is, and what the ideas are for the show. And in general, that’s what we’ve been doing for over a year now. And it’s worked really well. It started with AEW wrestlers going there and I had some thoughts and ideas about what they should or shouldn’t be doing.”

“And then New Japan started sending wrestlers here later in 2021, and for over a year, the Forbidden Door has gone both ways with wrestlers coming in from both companies and out and working for each other. So it is different when we’re working together like this and it’s been a great collaboration for a long time now with AEW and New Japan, and I like working with Gedo.”

Tony Khan then talked about if the plan for Forbidden Door is to be an annual event.

This is what Tony Khan said:

“Yeah. I think we are hoping that’s what it’ll become.”

As of this writing, five matches have already been made official for Forbidden Door and with NJPW and AEW still have a number of shows before the event, we can expect more matches to be announced soon.
