All Elite Wrestling and NJPW is set to hold their joint Forbidden Door PPV Event on Sunday, June 26th from inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dave Meltzer mentioned on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the current plan is for both the Interim AEW World Championship as well as the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to be defended and that the Interim AEW World Title Matchup will headline the PPV.
The competitors of the Interim AEW World Title Match at Forbidden Door was decided by having a number of matches that started on AEW Dynamite last Wednesday night. The opening match, which was the Casino Battle Royale, saw Kyle O’Reilly come out of the match as the winner and move on to the main event to face the #1 Contender to the AEW World Championship Jon Moxley. Moxley then defeated Kyle O’Reilly in the main event to advance to Forbidden Door. On the NJPW side of things, Hiroshi Tanahashi was set to face Hirooki Goto in a Singles Match at their Dominion Event and the winner will advance to Forbidden Door to battle Jon Moxley to crown the Interim AEW World Champion.
In regards to the IWGP Heavyweight Title Match, Meltzer mentioned that the match could end up being a 3-Way Match between “Hangman” Adam Page, Adam Cole and whoever the champion is after Dominion, either Kazuchika Okada or Jay White. This comes after Meltzer previously noted that the plans were for Okada to face Hangman page in Singles action, but it was later clarified to be incorrect. Immediately after defeating NJPW’s David Finlay on AEW Dynamite this past Wednesday night, Hangman Page said he doesn’t think he will be in the AEW World Title picture for some time, but there isn’t just one World Title.
Hangman then said he wants the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and he wants to face Kazuchika Okada and that prompted Adam Cole to stand up from the commentary position and tell Page that he is overlooking his Bullet Club comrade Jay White. Adam Cole then said that he is the one who deserves to compete for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Forbidden Door, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks leading to Forbidden Door.
