AEW World Champion CM Punk, who is one of the most popular and outspoken stars in all of professional wrestling, has been recognized as The Best In The World for a really long time now and until this day many still believe that Punk is The Best In The World, including AEW President and CEO Tony Khan. AEW President and CEO Tony Khan took to his Twitter and said that 11 years ago the AEW World Champion set the wrestling world ablaze and he is every bit as good today as he was back then.
The AEW CEO was referring to the time CM Punk was still under contract to the WWE and he was involved in a storyline with 16-time World Champion John Cena and WWE owner Vince McMahon, which would lead up to the 2011 WWE Money In The Bank Event. The storyline going into the match at WWE’s MITB was that CM Punk’s contract with the WWE was expiring the same day as his WWE Title Match against Cena and if The Best In The World won, then he vowed to leave the WWE with the WWE Championship and would only return when he saw fit. CM Punk ended up winning the match and he blew a kiss to a stunned Vince McMahon and headed out of the arena through the crowd to end the show. Punk would go on to hold the WWE Title for 434 days, a record which till this day is compared to some of the greatest title reigns in history.
This coming August not only marks the 11-year anniversary of the 2011 WWE MITB Event, but also the 1-year anniversary of CM Punk’s return to pro wrestling and AEW debut. CM Punk continues to be the talk of the pro wrestling world and he has been considered as arguably one of the best, if not the best to ever step foot in a professional wrestling ring. Punk has been out of action since last May due to an injury and in his absence, Jon Moxley was crowned the Interim AEW World Champion, when he beat NJPW’s Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door. CM Punk and Jon Moxley is set to have a Unification Match in the future, when CM Punk has been medically cleared to return.
