Tony Khan Confirms AEW Battle Of The Belts Special Event

A massive announcement was made by WarnerMedia last May that AEW’s flagship show, Dynamite, will move to TBS beginning January 5, 2022. An announcement would then be made that the company will be holding four supercard specials starting in 2022 on TNT to coincide with Dynamite moving to TBS. According to Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men wrestling podcast, a source within AEW has informed him that the company is planning to hold their first supercard special on Saturday, January 8 and that the special will be called “Battle of the Belts.”

AEW President and CEO Tony Khan recently took part in a media call for Saturday’s Full Gear Event and confirmed that the company does have a plan to hold a supercard special on TNT in early 2022 and that the special will be called “Battle of the Belts.”

Battle of the Belts was a show first held by the NWA and Championship Wrestling From Florida in 1985. The first-ever Battle of the Belts saw WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who was the NWA World Heavyweight Champion at the time, defeat Wahoo McDaniel in a best 2-Out-Of-3 Falls Match. In 1986, the second and third Battle of the Belts Events took place prior to the CWF going out of business in 1987.

Dave Meltzer indicated on a previous edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program that the “Battle of the Belts” Event is expected to be about an hour long as these special events are usually about an hour to an hour and a half long, which was inspired by the old Clash of the Champions Event.
