AEW and NJPW is set to hold their joint PPV Event known as Forbidden Door this coming Sunday from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois and just days prior to the blockbuster show, the lineup is already stacked from top to bottom with the possibility of one or two more matches being announced on today’s episode of AEW Rampage.
The lineup of Forbidden Door was changed a number of times due to the recent injuries the top talents in AEW would unfortunately suffer and quite possibly the biggest name of them all is “The Best In The World” CM Punk. The AEW World Champion was originally set to face Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event of Forbidden Door, but due to his injury an Interim AEW World Championship Tournament was created and it was determined in the end of the tournament that Jon Moxley will take on Hiroshi Tanahashi at this Sunday’s PPV to crown an Interim AEW World Champion.
AEW President and CEO Tony Khan recently appeared on Busted Open Radio and talked about how due to CM Punk’s injuries the original matchup could no longer take place and they had to find a new main event for Forbidden Door.
This is what Tony Khan said:
“CM Punk got injured.” “AEW had to find a new main event now that the original plan of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. CM Punk could no longer go forward.”
Tony Khan also talked about how the match between Moxley and Tanahashi is a dream match and how he is looking forward to CM Punk facing either of the two once Punk has been medically cleared to return to action. Khan then talked about how he had a lot of plans for Forbidden Door that not only involved CM Punk, but the other AEW Stars who recently suffered an injury, though the other stars did step up and keep the show rolling.
This is what Tony Khan said:
“Moxley vs. Tanahashi is a dream match the fans have been calling for, for years.” “I had a lot of plans leading into it, and I think that would’ve been great.” “And the TV was ready to go, we had a lot of great matches planned in the weeks leading into Forbidden Door.”
