The wrestling world has been eagerly awaiting news about Ilja Dragunov’s comeback, and recent developments suggest the intense NXT standout could be making his return sooner than expected. After nearly nine months away from the ring due to an ACL injury, multiple sources are painting an optimistic picture of the Mad Dragon’s recovery process.

Performance Center Visits Signal Progress

Wrestling insiders have been tracking Dragunov’s movements at WWE’s state-of-the-art training facility in Orlando. The former NXT Champion was last seen at the Performance Center approximately six weeks ago, according to WrestleVotes during a recent Q&A session.

“Last I heard of him was about six weeks ago now, and he was down at the PC. I don’t know if he was doing anything inside the ring, I know he was there. Usually, that indicates things are getting closer, so maybe soon, but I can’t say for sure.”

For wrestling fans familiar with WWE’s rehabilitation protocols, a wrestler’s presence at the PC typically signals they’re entering the final phases of their recovery. While it’s unclear whether Dragunov was cleared for in-ring activity during his visit, his appearance at the facility represents a significant milestone.

Intensified Rehabilitation Schedule

PWNexus reporter Cory Hays has provided additional insight into Dragunov’s current condition. According to Hays, the Russian powerhouse has ramped up his rehabilitation efforts considerably, participating in multiple daily sessions as he pushes toward his WWE return.

This aggressive approach to recovery demonstrates Dragunov’s determination to get back to the squared circle. However, sources close to the situation emphasize that no concrete timeline has been established for his comeback. WWE’s medical team continues to prioritize long-term health over rushing any return.

The Injury That Sidelined a Rising Star

Dragunov’s wrestling hiatus began in September 2024 when an ACL injury forced him out of action. His final televised match occurred on the September 9th episode of Monday Night Raw, where he competed in a fatal four-way Intercontinental Championship number one contender’s match alongside Pete Dunne, Braun Strowman, and eventual winner Jey Uso.

The injury timing was particularly unfortunate, as Dragunov had been building momentum on the main roster. His last in-ring appearance came at a WWE house show on September 28, 2024, facing his longtime rival GUNTHER. By late June 2025, it will mark exactly nine months since fans last witnessed the Mad Dragon’s signature intensity and technical prowess.

King of the Ring Speculation

Wrestling enthusiasts have begun connecting dots regarding Dragunov’s potential return timeline. WWE has advertised a mystery competitor for an upcoming King of the Ring first-round fatal four-way match featuring Rusev, Sheamus, and Bronson Reed.

While purely speculative at this point, the timing of Dragunov’s rehabilitation progress and this mysterious booking has sparked considerable discussion among the WWE Universe. His in-ring style and compelling storyline potential would certainly fit the tournament’s prestigious nature.

What’s Next for the Mad Dragon?

As Dragunov continues his recovery journey, WWE fans can take comfort in knowing the talented performer is making steady progress. His dedication to multiple daily rehabilitation sessions showcases the work ethic that made him a standout performer in NXT and beyond.

The wrestling landscape has certainly missed Dragunov’s unique blend of technical skill and raw intensity. With Performance Center visits and intensified rehab schedules painting an encouraging picture, could we be witnessing the final chapter of his recovery story before the Mad Dragon returns to unleash chaos once again?
