Backstage News On When Buddy Matthews Signed With AEW

On June 2, 2021, Buddy Murphy (now known as Buddy Matthews) was released by the WWE reportedly due to budget cuts and he has since worked for a number of indie promotions as well as MLW and NJPW. On last Wednesday night’s episode of Dynamite, Buddy Matthews made his promotional AEW debut, when he made an appearance immediately following the tag team match between House Of Black and Death Triangle and put members of Death Triangle down.

Fightful Select reports that even before Buddy Matthews made his AEW debut this past Wednesday night, he and AEW already had discussions as far back as this past fall about signing with the promotion. No mention was made as to when Matthews’ deal with All Elite Wrestling was reached, but a few talents in AEW knew he was coming in and knew that he would be aligned with House Of Black three weeks before he officially signed with the company, indicating that the deal was reached for quite some time now.

The report also states that people in AEW have noted that Buddy Matthews has been making quite a good impression since he arrived in the company last Wednesday. There was an instance where he made a good impression for nixing a planned spot after he found out that he had to use the finishing move of some other wrestler in AEW.
