Cody Rhodes Is Reportedly Working In AEW As A Free Agent

Professional wrestling veteran and top AEW Star “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, who signed with the promotion back in 2019 and who is one of the key person responsible for the creation of All Elite Wrestling, has reportedly been working in AEW without a contract for a few weeks now. Fightful Select reports that Cody Rhodes’ AEW contract expired at the end of 2021, which means that he has since been working as a free agent.

It was also mentioned that sources within AEW have revealed that there are people who knew about this for a few weeks now, but there are a number of contracts in the company that have different specifics to what was originally stated such as the length of the contract.

“The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes had a conversation with Sports Illustrated last month in regards to his future with the company. According to Cody, he can’t see himself working for any other company and AEW is and will always be his future.

This is what Cody Rhodes said:

“As of now, my future is with AEW. AEW would be very strange without the core members of the revolution. We (the EVP’s) all still talk. We all have this admiration for each other. I can’t see myself anywhere else, and I’m very optimistic about what the future holds.”

Cody Rhodes is the current and three-time AEW TNT Champion after he beat Sammy Guevara on the Holiday Bash episode of AEW Rampage this past December 25th. Cody was set to defend his AEW TNT Title against Sammy Guevara at the Battle of The Belts special this past January 8, but he was pulled from the show due to a medical issue. Sammy Guevara would instead have to face Dustin Rhodes and he defeated him to become the Interim AEW TNT Champion. A Title Unification Match is expected to take place between Cody Rhodes and Sammy Guevara, but there is no word yet on when the match will take place.

There’s also no word yet on when Cody Rhodes will sign a new contract with AEW, but he is set to make his AEW TV return on tomorrow’s episode of Dynamite in Washington, D.C.
