Last June 2nd, WWE released a number of Superstars reportedly due to budget cuts brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and one of those Superstars is “The Premiere Athlete” Tony Nese. Nese is a one-time WWE Cruiserweight Champion, with his win taking place on the kickoff show of WrestleMania 35, when he defeated Buddy Murphy in front of his home town crowd.
Shortly after his 90-day non-compete clause with the WWE expired, Nese worked on the Indie scene with a number of promotions. An AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament Match would take place between Bryan Danielson and Dustin Rhodes on an episode of Saturday Night Dynamite last week and Tony Nese was seen in the front row of the crowd and he was referred to as “one of the hot free agents in pro wrestling” by the commentators.
All Elite Wrestling recently held their latest set of TV Tapings for Dark inside Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and the former WWE Star made his AEW in-ring debut when he went up against Fuego Del Sol in Singles action during the first session of the television tapings and DeMarcio James also in a Singles Match during the second session of the television tapings.
Dave Meltzer mentioned on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program that Tony Nese has signed with AEW, but the promotion has not made anything official just yet. The promotion is expected to make an official announcement on social media in the near future of Nese signing a full-time deal, most likely after Nese’s match against Fuego Del Solo on Dark is aired on YouTube.
There’s no word yet on if Nese signed a “tier 0” contract or a “tier 1” contract, but updates will be provided once it becomes available. A tier 0 contract is where a talent is paid per appearance, while a tier contract 1 is a base contract for a performer.
