As previously reported, AEW Star Kenny Omega appeared via video at the NJPW X STARDOM Historic X-Over Event and challenged IWGP United States Champion Will Ospreay to a match at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th, 2023 for Ospreay’s IWGP United States Title. Kenny Omega would cut a promo on Ospreay and how he needs to face the IWGP United States Champion at the Tokyo Dome for the good of wrestling. Ospreay would accept Omega’s challenge and the made was made official for NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17.
According to Fightful Select, talks regarding the match started several months ago during the summer, with Rocky Romero playing a huge role in facilitating the match and helping it get cleared and it was finalized about two or three weeks back. It was also noted that Omega being suspended due to the huge post-AEW All Out brawl with CM Punk slowed down the talks before it picked up and got finalized. NJPW Star Rocky Romero is reportedly someone who has been a major factor in the company’s global expansion as well as their positive relationships with numerous professional wrestling companies, including AEW and he was said to be in frequent contact with AEW President Tony Khan in making deals happen.
