Pat Patterson Passes Away At 79, AEW Stars Pay Tribute

WWE legend and first ever Intercontinental Champion has sadly passed away on Dec 2nd, 2020, WWE.com has confirmed. He was 79 years old.

He was reportedly battling cancer and was hospitalized in Miami, Florida at the time of his death.

Patterson had worked for WWE since 1979, first as a wrestler and then transitioning to a backstage role in 1984.

In 1987, Patterson coined the idea for the Royal Rumble match, which has remained a mainstay marquee match in WWE year on year. Patterson was also the first openly gay wrestler in the industry, paving the way for others in later years.

Patterson’s legacy and influence stretched far beyond the confines of WWE. Some of the AEW roster have tweeted their tributes to Patterson today.
