As previously reported, AEW President Tony Khan appeared on Busted Open Radio and revealed that he is working on something massive for the promotion and hopes he will have it done soon, but he’s not sure if it is what the fans would expect, though he knows it would be a big deal for pro wrestling.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer then revealed that Tony Khan was in meetings the entire day on Friday as he was trying to put together the “massive” deal, but no other details were mentioned as to what that “massive” deal is. Prior to last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan noted that he can’t yet reveal the “massive” announcement, but hopefully he will be able to soon as their legal team has put them under NDAs, meaning he won’t be able to reveal all the details until it has been finalized. Khan then noted that the “massive” announcement is a little bit different than anything they have done before, but it is going to be awesome.
Tony Khan then returned to Busted Open Radio and provided another blockbuster update on the “massive” announcement. According to Khan, the fans should definitely not miss Dynamite this week as aside from a lot of great wrestling on the show, the announcement he has been talking about for a while now will be revealed on the show and it is not one particular piece of talent, it’s something that is going to be very important in the wrestling business and he is excited about it.
The opening segment of last night’s episode of Dynamite saw AEW President and CEO Tony Khan thank the crowd and promise them that the action will get started soon. Khan then said that this night would be the biggest night in the history of the company and revealed that the major announcement is he signed a deal to become the new and official owner of Ring Of Honor. Earlier in the week, there were reports that ROH and another promotion were in talks about a possible sale and it has now been made clear the deal was between AEW and Ring Of Honor.
An official press release was issued in regards to Tony Khan purchasing ROH, where it was stated that ROH’s entire video library as well as their brand assets and their intellectual property were part of what Tony Khan had acquired and Joe Koff, the Chief Operating Officer for Ring Of Honor, explains how people who are currently involved with the promotion are excited to see how Tony continues the legacy of the company.
ROH has been on a major hiatus since last December’s Final Battle PPV and the company will make their return to PPV on Friday, April 1 for Supercard Of Honor, which is their first event back from a major hiatus. Prior to going on a major hiatus, ROH announced that they will be taking some time off during the first quarter of this year to reimagine the new direction of the company and to return with a new fan-focused product as well as to provide a unique experience.
