People In AAA Believed Dragon Lee Joining WWE Was A Joke

It was previously reported that top pro wrestling and Lucha Libre Star Dragon Lee signed with the WWE this past December, but he will only start with the company some time this January as a member of the NXT roster. Lee announced his WWE signing at AAA’s Noche De Campeones Event this past month following his and Dralistico’s huge win over FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) to become the new AAA World Tag Team Champions.

Dave Meltzer revealed on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that certain people in AAA such as the announcers and the media believed Dragon Lee joining the WWE was a joke and it had no ounce of truth to it since their version of April Fool’s day was during the day that the AAA Noche De Campeones Event took place.

This is what Dave Meltzer said:

“The announcers, as well as a lot of fans and media, believed the Dragon Lee going to WWE story was a joke since their version of April Fool’s day was the day of the show. That’s why they no sold his interview talking about going to WWE after winning the tag titles.”

Dragon Lee has been a champion in a number of major pro wrestling promotions, including New Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring Of Honor, AAA and CMLL. Lee has also competed in AEW and his last match took place on the August 28th episode of AEW Dynamite, when he teamed up with RUSH and Andrade El Idolo to face The Elite in an AEW World Trios Tournament Match. It was during that match when Lee got over the AEW fans and the company had an interest in signing him to a deal. WWE is under the impression that Dragon Lee will be their next big Hispanic Star such as Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio and the company hopes to have him on the main roster by next year.
