The One Big Thing: Teddy Long Reveals Origins of His Catchphrase and Signature Dance

Family Inspiration

Former “WWE SmackDown” General Manager Teddy Long recently shared the heartwarming story behind his famous catchphrase and signature dance on Chris Van Vliet’s “Insight” podcast. Long revealed that both had sweet family origins:

  • His catchphrase “playa” came from talking to his big dog named Boss, saying things like “Come on playa. Get out of the way playa, move.”
  • His signature dance was inspired by his grandson’s movements while learning to walk in a walker, bopping up and down.

Vince McMahon’s Approval

Long recounted a pivotal moment at a WWE taping when he was about to walk out to the ring. Vince McMahon, the former WWE chairman, flagged him down and encouraged him to do the dance.

“Vince was standing up. He’s yelling, ‘Do that dance,'” Long explained. “[I say] ‘What dance?’ And he starts doing it, and that’s how the dance started.”

Why It Matters

Teddy Long’s catchphrase and dance became iconic parts of his character, endearing him to fans and cementing his status as one of the most beloved authority figures in WWE history. The personal, family-inspired origins of these trademark elements add a heartwarming layer to Long’s legacy in the wrestling world.
