It has been talked about for a few years now that WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be coming back to the company for one more match at a WrestleMania and face his cousin Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in Singles action, but it has never been a real possibility until now. The Rock was supposed to take on Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 38 this past April in Dallas, Texas, but the WWE legend did not have any interest in doing the match in Dallas, Texas as he was more interested in the match taking place in Los Angeles, which is why WWE decided to have Brock Lesnar face Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 38 Night Two.
With the 2023 WWE Royal Rumble Event being the first Royal Rumble under the regime of Triple H, he is looking to make a statement and is planning something truly spectacular for the official start to the road to next year’s WrestleMania 39. Dave Meltzer noted on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE has an idea in place for The Rock to appear at the Royal Rumble Event, however it has not been confirmed yet at this point and it is merely a rumor until The People’s Champ himself is open to the idea of appearing on the show and doing it as it would be the perfect scenario for WWE to set up the massive showdown at WrestleMania 39.
Meltzer also noted that if The Rock’s schedule will allow for it to happen, then The Brahma Bull will more than likely compete at WrestleMania 39 against Reigns in The Great One’s retirement match as The Rock wanted it to happen in Los Angeles.
This is what Dave Meltzer said:
“The idea was being talked about behind-the-scenes, but as best we can tell, while rumors certainly exist within the company, as far as those who would be in a position to know, there is no real answer. If Johnson wants to do it and can be sold on the idea, it would be the most perfect scenario for the company.”
“Originally, the belief was that if his schedule allowed for it, Johnson would do likely his last match at Mania with Reigns, who is a family member. This has been talked about for years, and Johnson wanted it in Los Angeles if he could do it.”
It was then stated on the report that the only thing they are aware of at the moment is plans for the WWE WrestleMania 39 main event needs to be set in stone by mid-January and if Dwayne Johnson wants to do the match, then he needs to let the company know by then. As of this writing, there is no word yet on if The Rock being a surprise entrant in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match as the final entrant has been made official or if he will be winning the matchup to set up his showdown against Reigns, but updates will be provided once it has been made available.
