Over the past number of months, WWE drastically changed up the strategy of their NXT brand by sending several main roster talents to NXT such as WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins, WWE Hall of Famer and WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio, The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor, WWE Women’s World Champion “The Eradicator” Rhea Ripley, “Senior Money In The Bank” Damian Priest and current WWE NXT North American Champion “Dirty Dom” Dominik Mysterio and Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo of Los Lotharios, which has resulted in a huge increase in the brand’s viewership numbers.
WWE had no storyline in mind for Los Lotharios (Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo) and that is one of the reasons they were sent down to NXT, so that they will be repackaged and they can regain momentum. Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo started teaming together on an episode of RAW in September 2021 and as part of the 2021 WWE Draft, they were drafted to the SmackDown brand before the team was named Los Lotharios.
Dave Meltzer noted on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Los Lotharios are in NXT right now, but once the company feels they’re ready there are long-term plans for Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo to be moved up to the main roster once again and this time as an authentic babyface Mexican tag team.
Prior to their return to NXT, Los Lotharios had only worked in three main roster matches in 2023. Los Lotharios made their NXT TV return on an episode of NXT TV this past June, when they attacked Scrypts and Axiom immediately following their win over Dabba Kato in a 2-On-1 Handicap Match. Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo have since been doing video vignettes by using their grandfather with the idea that he was a big Mexican Superstar.
