WWE will be holding their WrestleMania 39 Premium Live Event on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2 from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California and the company is looking to stack their card and make it the biggest WrestleMania of all time based on recent reports of who the promotion wants to bring back and the matches they want to have.
One of the matches WWE was hoping to have was for The Rock to battle current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39, but the promotion was looking to finalize the main event plans by last January and it was believed that WWE legend The Rock had to give the WWE an answer regarding his status for The Show Of Shows before February.
As previously reported, The Rock’s status for WWE WrestleMania 39 wasn’t set in stone by the deadline and he may still appear on the show in a different capacity, but he will not be competing because the WWE legend feels he doesn’t have enough time to get into the kind of shape he feels he needs to be in for the blockbuster matchup with Roman Reigns. It was also reported that the WWE has known for months that The Rock couldn’t compete at WrestleMania 39 and he turned down the matchup a while back, but he has left the door open for next year’s WrestleMania, so WWE is instead going in a different direction and that is Cody Rhodes challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the WrestleMania 39 Premium Live Event.
WrestlingNews.co reported last December when WWE legend The Rock has not yet turned down competing at WrestleMania 39 that the WWE had plans to separate the Undisputed WWE Universal Title into two, which is the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship as the plan was for Seth Rollins to battle Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes for the WWE Title in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Night 1 and “The Tribal Chief” Roman Reigns to defend the WWE Universal Title against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Night 2.
Dave Meltzer noted on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program that this was the plan originally for WrestleMania 39’s main events before The Rock decided not to compete.
This is what Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez said:
Dave Meltzer: “The key to this is they are not creating a new championship on the Saturday night show.”
Bryan Alvarez: “They’re not creating a new championship?”
Dave Meltzer: “Yeah, there was talk of doing the second title on Saturday night.”
Bryan Alvarez: “I’d always been under the impression that Roman was defending both titles.”
Dave Meltzer: “No, if it was Roman and The Rock, they were gonna create a championship on Saturday night that Cody probably would have ended up winning. But it was Cody, Drew or Rollins that was gonna come out of that one. Because they wanna go back to two titles….Obviously, at WrestleMania, it’s for both belts. They did explain, again they did say it’s now two belts again. It’s not one belt. It’s back to two belts. They are, at some point, going to separate them.”
