CM Punk Injured, Interim AEW World Champion To Be Crowned

At the AEW Double Or Nothing PPV Event, CM Punk got the biggest win of his entire AEW career, when he defeated “Hangman” Adam Page to become the brand-new AEW World Champion, but just days after his huge victory, The Best In The World made an appearance on an episode of AEW Rampage and delivered some sad and heart-wrenching news.

According to CM Punk, he has suffered an injury that requires surgery and due to that, he will be out of in-ring action for quite some time. CM Punk also revealed that his situation is just a bump in the road, but he didn’t want to hold up the company and was ready to relinquish the title. Punk then said that AEW President and CEO Tony Khan told him that he does not need to relinquish the AEW World Title before promising the fans that he will come back bigger, faster, stronger and hungrier than ever.

Following CM Punk’s heart-wrenching news, it was announced that he has not relinquished his title but an Interim AEW World Champion will be crowned at the Forbidden Door PPV Event later this month, which will all begin with a Battle Royale in the opening match of this Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite. The winner of the Battle Royale will then go up against Jon Moxley in the main event of AEW Dynamite. The winner of the match between Moxley and the Battle Royale winner will then advance to Forbidden Door and face an opponent that has yet to be named or possibly even Hiroshi Tanahashi, who was previously announced to face CM Punk and the winner of that match will then face CM Punk in a Unification Match at a later date, when Punk returns from his injury.

CM Punk didn’t reveal the severity of his injury as well as how long he will be out of action, but as soon as updates are available, it will be provided. Punk was noticeably limping during a segment with MJF this past Wednesday night on AEW Dynamite and it is believed that he suffered the injury during a 6-Man Tag Team Match earlier in the evening, when Punk and FTR defeated Max Caster and The Gunn Club. The AEW World Champion was also limping this past Friday night on AEW Rampage, when he was making his way down to the ring.
