News On Original Plans For Jon Moxley At Forbidden Door

AEW and NJPW is set to hold their joint PPV known as Forbidden Door tomorrow, June 26 from inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois and just one day prior to the massive event, the lineup is already stacked from top to bottom. Forbidden Door’s card was changed several times due to the recent slew of injuries the top talents in AEW and NJPW would unfortunately suffer and AEW World Champion CM Punk is quite possibly the biggest name of them all to be put on the sidelines.

AEW World Champion CM Punk was originally set to go up against Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event of Forbidden Door, but due to his injury an Interim AEW World Championship Tournament was created and it was determined in the very end of the tournament that Jon Moxley will battle Hiroshi Tanahashi at the Forbidden Door PPV to crown an Interim AEW World Champion.

Tomorrow’s Forbidden Door will also see Shota Umino, Wheeler Yuta and Eddie Kingston face The Jericho Appreciation Society’s “The Wizard” Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara and Suzuki-gun’s Minoru Suzuki in Trios action. According to Dave Meltzer on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original match was supposed to see Jon Moxley team up with Wheeler Yuta and Eddie Kingston to take on Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara and Minoru Suzuki, but due to CM Punk’s injury and Moxley being named as one of the finalist in the Interim AEW World Championship Tournament to battle Tanahashi at Forbidden Door to crown an Interim AEW World Champion, Shota Umino was put in place of Moxley.

The winner of the Interim AEW World Championship Match at Forbidden Door will face AEW World Champion CM Punk in a Unification Match once Punk has been medically cleared to return to in-ring action.
