Former WWE Champion CM Punk is recognized as one of, if not the most popular, outspoken and prominent personalities in all of wrestling and he is also considered to be one of, if not the best wrestler in the world. CM Punk left the professional wrestling industry in 2014 immediately following that year’s WWE Royal Rumble Event as he was unhappy with the treatment he was receiving from the WWE.
CM Punk would then pursue his dream when he fought in the UFC twice, but would unfortunately suffer a defeat on both occasions. Punk also pursued a career in acting and made a few appearance on FS1’s WWE Backstage. Back in 2019, CM Punk crashed an indie show while wearing a mask, but he didn’t compete on the show and he hasn’t competed in an official match since he left the WWE in 2014, but that will all change soon as he is rumored to be signing with AEW and his AEW debut is rumored to take place inside the United Center in Chicago on August 20th for the First Dance special episode of AEW Rampage.
NJPW Star KENTA, who also worked for the WWE in the past from June 2014 – February 2019, has taken to his Twitter and called out CM Punk by making it perfectly clear that he wants to face Punk in a match down the line now that Punk is making his return to pro wrestling. A match between KENTA and Punk has been discussed for a really long time now, which dates back to when CM Punk started using the GTS (Go To Sleep) finisher in the WWE as GTS is a move that was popularized by KENTA in Japan and CM Punk has even acknowledged that he stole the move from KENTA.
KENTA has called CM Punk out for years now, but Punk had already left pro wrestling and now that Punk is rumored to return to pro wrestling and sign with AEW and NJPW has a working relationship with AEW, their dream match could happen sooner rather than later. It will be interesting to see if AEW books a match between CM Punk and KENTA and if Punk’s return to pro wrestling includes other matches in NJPW.
