TBS/TNT Exec On Moving AEW Dynamite To TBS, Rhodes To The Top

A massive announcement was previously made by WarnerMedia that AEW’s flagship show, Dynamite, will be moving to TBS starting January 5th, 2022. It was also announced that the company will be holding four supercard specials starting in 2022 on TNT to coincide with AEW Dynamite’s move to TBS. Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men podcast then revealed that a source within AEW has informed him that they are planning to hold their first-ever TNT supercard special on Saturday, January 8th and that the name of the show will be called “Battle of the Belts.”

Brett Weitz, WarnerMedia’s General Manager of TNT, TBS and truTV, recently spoke with Nellie Andreeva of Deadline on how AEW has continued to become an overperformer for the network and how it has become one of the biggest shows in cable, which is incredible for them. Weitz also spoke about how they have something for everyone and how they wanted to deliver to the loyal viewers, with Rampage airing every Friday nights on TNT and Rhodes To The Top airing immediately after Dynamite.

This is what Brett Weitz said:

“We have AEW, which continues to be such an overperformer; this challenger brand of a wrestling asset has now become one of the biggest shows in cable, which is incredible for us.” “We obviously started a completely new night and new show on Friday nights with AEW Rampage.”

“And we have Rhodes to the Top, which is a different asset, but when you think of it in totality, TNT really has something for everyone, and that’s the thing that we wanted to be able to deliver for those people that still come to us each and every day. If someone comes to us to watch Shawshank Redemption, they stay for Snowpiercer, Animal Kingdom, our sports. They come to us for some of the greatest content, first-in-class content on basic cable.”

Weitz also talked about if they have already decided whether or not they will renew Rhodes To The Top for a second season.

This is what Brett Weitz said:

“No. Not yet. It just ran and finished, and we’re settling in with numbers.” “You know this, Nellie, to just go Live+Same Day is so antiquated. You want to see how things are consumed on VOD and see how things continue to play out.”

Weitz then talked about deciding to move AEW Dynamite to TBS starting January 5th as TNT will air NHL together with the NBA and what it will mean for TBS.

This is what Brett Weitz said:

“We obviously make these decisions with a lot of data and gut behind them.” “The brand of TBS is we’re always here for a good time. That is exactly what AEW is and AEW Dynamite, and so, when we look at the concentric circles of TBS and TNT, our TBS viewer is a heavy drama viewer, believe it or not.”

“So, we know that those fans will migrate over, and we also believe that wrestling fans find the content wherever it is, and we also think, more wrestling’s better for everybody, honestly.”
