MJF has been one of the top Stars in All Elite Wrestling ever since he signed with the promotion back in 2019. He has been put in a feud with AEW TNT Champion Wardlow, former AEW Champion CM Punk and top WWE Star Cody Rhodes over the past year or so and he is recognized as one of, if not the biggest heel not only in AEW, but in all of pro wrestling.
Following his rant on an episode of AEW Dynamite several months back, MJF made his highly-anticipated return at the All Out PPV when he would win the Casino Ladder Match with the help of Stokely Hathaway and a number of other AEW talents to earn a future shot at the AEW World Championship, currently held by Jon Moxley. Since then, the AEW fans have been behind MJF and they have even been cheering for him every chance they get to the point that they are now being referred to as “Devil Worshipers” and that has even led to All Elite Wrestling releasing a shirt for MJF that reads “I am a Devil Worshiper.”
During this past Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, MJF was viscously attacked by The Firm and it’s been discussed since his return at AEW’s All Out PPV that there could be plans of turning the top AEW Star babyface. Bryan Alvarez noted on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Live that since MJF made his return to AEW the fans have been cheering for him non-stop and their plan was for him to remain a heel and AEW was even finding ways for the fans to boo him, but the fans cheering just wouldn’t stop, so AEW is no longer finding ways for fans to boo MJF as there are people in AEW who believe he should become a full-blown babyface and he could be a massive star as a babyface. It was also noted that AEW did not plan for this to happen when MJF made his return, but things have changed since. Dave Meltzer did mention on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program that MJF wants to remain as a heel and he does not want to be a babyface.
This is what Bryan Alvarez said:
“Ever since he came back, the fans have wanted to cheer him. When he first came back, he was not supposed to be a babyface, he was supposed to be a heel. And they cheered and they cheered and they cheered. Then, for several weeks, they started doing the deal where he would come out before the show and bury the crowd to try to make sure that he was booed during the show because they wanted him to be a heel.”
“Well, now they are no longer doing that. Now they are just going with it at this moment. The question is do you go all the way with it or do you do whatever and he ends up being a heel again. What I can tell you is there are people within AEW that strongly believe that they should go with him as a babyface right now. They feel that he could be a massive babyface star for AEW. They think that is what he should do now.” “There are people who believe he could be a generational babyface. That was not the intention when he came back but things happen.”
