As previously reported, MJF recently had an interview with Ariel Helwani on topics such as WWE having an interest in him when his contract expires in 2024, his current status with the company in terms of his contract, the AEW departure of “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes and his relationship with WWE Executive Bruce Prichard. Fightful Select reported that AEW President Tony Khan took issue with MJF’s interview as he did not notify the promotion’s PR team beforehand and that led to a heated discussion between the two.
It was also mentioned on the report that the interview MJF had with Ariel Helwani led to Khan and MJF having a discussion this past weekend and both men were left frustrated after their discussion. MJF’s AEW contract status was reportedly one of the key reasons why the top AEW Star has been frustrated as of late. The report also stated that people in All Elite Wrestling have noted if the topics discussed during the interview were brought up with the company’s PR team beforehand, then there would not have been an issue as Tony Khan is concerned about the precedent being set of AEW talents doing interviews without even discussing it with the PR team first, which has been their s.o.p. since 2019.
Dave Meltzer reported on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program that the issues MJF and AEW CEO Tony Khan had “are now said to be settled” and that even though their heated argument did really happen, “there was no fight” or physical altercation between the AEW Star and AEW President. A report from Fightful Select then revealed that MJF and AEW CEO Tony Khan had a follow-up conversation this past Monday and that the talk went much smoother than the first. People in the company have said that MJF and AEW CEO Tony Khan have maintained a good relationship since AEW was established and they have become good friends.
During the interview, MJF noted that his AEW contract is up January 1st, 2024 and he is not afraid to stir the pot as when someone is as talented and as much of a draw as he is, then he can bite off Tony Khan’s fingers and he does not care who he offends because he is literally the best talker in the pro wrestling business and one of the best wrestlers in the history of the business bell to bell.
MJF also talked about WWE’s interest in him once his AEW contract is up, but legally he can’t discuss the reason why. MJF then revealed that there is a frontrunner he is leaning towards to and he will go where the money is, but he can’t say right now which way he is leaning towards to.
