AEW President Tony Khan held a conference call this past Tuesday (12/01) to promote the upcoming special episode of Dynamite Winter Is Coming.
Khan also spoke on a number of other topics including trios titles, further special episodes of Dynamite and Moxley’s current status with New Japan Pro Wrestling. Below are some of the notable comments Khan made during the call.
Regarding future special episode of Dynamite, Khan said they were important as not to oversaturate their PPV market. He said he enjoys giving certain Dynamite shows that special PPV feel. A big Christmas show, New Year show and ‘Beach Break’ are on the horizon too.
On the upcoming Winter Is Coming show, Khan said they have some big stuff planned for the episode but didn’t reveal anything more. He said that the Moxley vs Omega match will main event and that TNT will allow them to run past 10pm EST if necessary. He said he wanted the match to be on the flagship show in order to establish new traditions.
On signing new talent without releasing any, Khan said he hasn’t made any releases due to the pandemic. He said he doesn’t want to release talent because it’s difficult to find work in the wrestling business at the best of times, and even worse during the current situation. He said he’s utilized Dark to help develop talent rather than simply cutting it.
Khan said that the current deal with TNT is $175 million per year.
Regarding Jon Moxley working Wrestle Kingdom 15, Khan said he wouldn’t be. The issue wasn’t related to Moxley’s requirement to quarantine upon arrival in Japan, it was simply due to the fact there had been no storyline established for him.
On the subject of a potential trios championship, Khan said it was definitely something on his agenda for 2021. With so many three-man groups in AEW, it’s something that seems a natural fit.
On Miro, Khan said he’s working on developing his character and believes Miro will be a star in both the wrestling and gaming worlds by next year. The upcoming plan for Miro is to work with Best Friends and build Miro towards one of the AEW title scenes.
Khan mentioned his “balance of power” tweet and that the story he was referencing would play out in the weeks to come.
Despite the name of tonight’s Dynamite episode, Tony Khan said he’s never seen Game of Thrones but his mother loves the show. The reason they were able to use the Winter Is Coming tagline is due to TNT being affiliated with WarnerMedia, the company which owns HBO.
He said 1000 fans will be in attendance for the Winter Is Coming show, and compared it to the crowd size at some of the bigger ECW shows back in the nineties. He said all fans will be socially distanced and masks will be mandatory as always.
