Having made a memorable WWE appearance on an episode of SmackDown back in September 2023, speculation was rife that “The Rock” might soon return to the ring to confront undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
But as per the latest buzz from The Hollywood Reporter, “The Rock” is set to flex his acting muscles in a different arena. A24, the prestigious studio behind films like “The Iron Claw,” has announced that Johnson will star in the upcoming drama “The Smashing Machine.” This production will see him collaborating with acclaimed director Benny Safdie, best known for directing “Uncut Gems,” who has also taken on writing duties for this new venture.
“The Smashing Machine” is not merely a fictional story; it draws inspiration from an HBO-produced documentary of the same name, which aired back in 2002. The film is a portrayal of Mark Kerr’s life, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Kerr, nicknamed “The Smashing Machine” for his aggressive fighting style, had a career marred by a struggle with an addiction to painkillers, ultimately leading to an overdose.
Dwayne Johnson, alongside his business partner Dany Garcia, will be producing the project under their Seven Bucks Productions banner, teaming up with Safdie’s Out for the Count, as well as producers Eli Bush and David Koplan.
While the anticipation for “The Smashing Machine” is building, fans of ‘The Rock’ can also look forward to his appearances in other upcoming projects such as Netflix’s “Red Notice 2” and Amazon’s action-comedy “Red One.”
