GUNTHER Discusses Past Disdain for WWE Before Becoming Intercontinental Champion

As professional wrestling’s landscape continues to evolve, with talent from around the globe making significant impacts within various promotions, one standout performer has recently offered insight into his journey and initial reservations about the industry’s juggernaut, WWE. WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has come a long way from his days as a staunch critic of WWE’s product to become an integral part of it, setting records and captivating audiences worldwide with his dominant in-ring performances.

GUNTHER’s tenure in WWE might suggest he was always destined for the promotion, but that wasn’t always the case. In a candid discussion with WrestlingNews.co, the “Ring General” revealed his initial feelings toward WWE during his early wrestling days. “When I grew up as a wrestler—not when I was a kid, but when I was wrestling and diving in deep and trying to get better and stuff—I don’t know, I kind of despised WWE at that point because I didn’t like watching it,” GUNTHER said.

His primary focus was on the athleticism and craft of wrestling, which at the time, he felt WWE’s product wasn’t aligned with his personal preference. It was too much of a departure from what he was passionate about in wrestling. He was looking to hone a style rooted in the pure, athletic aspect of the sport. Despite these early misgivings, GUNTHER’s path would eventually lead him to not only join WWE but to find great success within it.

Breaking into WWE’s European-based brand, NXT UK, in 2019 seemed to be a pivotal turning point for GUNTHER. His subsequent transition to the US NXT brand in 2022 further showcased his adaptability and wrestling prowess, paving the way for his main roster call-up later that year. GUNTHER’s rise to prominence within WWE has been a testament to his skill and dedication to the industry he once harbored mixed feelings about.

Today, GUNTHER’s accomplishments speak volumes, with the Austrian powerhouse currently holding the distinction of being the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. He captured the prestigious title from Ricochet back in June 2022 and has since defended it with an iron grip, establishing his era as one redefining the legacy of the championship.

GUNTHER has not shied away from expressing his ambitions for continuing to climb the ranks within WWE, recently stating that he believes he has outgrown his position as the Intercontinental Champion—suggesting aspirations for even greater success within the company. Transcribed by Sportskeeda, this revelation hints at GUNTHER’s evolving perspective on WWE, showing that his journey with the promotion is far from over.

As the wrestling world converges on events like Survivor Series 2023, GUNTHER’s story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of the industry. It’s a narrative of growth, change, and ultimately, the recognition of a talent who has learned to navigate and excel within the unique universe that is WWE. For wrestling enthusiasts desiring to witness history and discuss the latest developments such as GUNTHER’s reign, gatherings like the WrestleTalk Survivor Series Watch Party in London serve as excellent platforms for fans to come together in their shared love for the sport.
