Cody Rhodes Has Reportedly Been Studying Legendary Feud For AEW Angle

Those who tuned in for last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite would have seen Cody Rhodes and Lee Johnson beat Peter Avalon and Cezar Bononi. This was a significant moment for Johnson as it was his first career victory in AEW. After this match, Johnson was given some time to thank Cody, Dustin, Brandi, and Arn Anderson. With a notable omission being QT Marshall.

Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio revealed that Cody has been studying the classic Bruno Sammartino and Larry Zbyszko feud. During this feud, Zbyszko turned heel in the early ‘80s as he attempted to distance himself from his former mentor.

Maybe we can take from this that AEW will attempt to write a similar story with Johnson feuding against his trainer Marshall. Meltzer did add that Johnson-Marshall is probably Cody’s idea while hoping to use the Sammartino feud as the framework for the potential angle
