It was reported last year that AEW was planning to introduce brand-new championship titles and it was expected that one of the titles will be a secondary Women’s Champion Title as the women’s division in AEW has significantly grown in the past year or so and more women’s tag team matches have been taking place across all shows. Several months later, the promotion introduced the AEW TBS Championship and a tournament to crown the inaugural AEW TBS Champion took place, which was won by Jade Cargill.
Even though the promotion introduced the AEW TBS Title a number of months back, there were rumors and speculations that they will be introducing the Trios Tag Team Championships as well and a few top AEW Stars, including the Young Bucks, made it perfectly clear in their Twitter bio that they want to have Trios Titles in AEW. The Young Bucks wrote several months ago, “Give us the Trios Titles. #SuperKliq”
AEW President and CEO Tony Khan recently appeared on The Corner Podcast, where he confirmed that they have in fact created a Trios Title, so an inaugural champion will be crowned soon.
This is what Tony Khan said:
“I have the belts.” “I possess the trios belts, so it’ll happen.”
Tony Khan also spoke about how a Trios Tag Team Championship is popular in many other different parts of the world and now they need to serve those markets as well and since several fans have been asking about the Trios Titles, Khan thinks it is great to have them be part of the company.
This is what Tony Khan said:
“We’ve got a great group of trios in AEW.” “Fans are asking for it all the time. I think it makes a lot of sense. There’s a number of markets we need to service and I think trios are popular in many parts of the world. I think it would be great.”
AEW President Tony Khan has been booking quite a number of Trios Tag Matchups over the past number of months and the tag team as well as men’s division in AEW has been so stacked as of late with factions such as The Elite, Dark Order, Blackpool Combat Club, Best Friends, House Of Black, A.F.O. and others recently being added that it is only fitting to add a Trios Tag Team Title.
Dave Meltzer noted on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Trios Tag Team Title belts have recently been created in AEW and it’s only a matter of time before the company decides to pull the trigger and introduce them. Dave Meltzer also noted that AEW President and CEO Tony Khan said last March during a media call that the Trios Tag Team Title belts will definitely be coming, but he did not want to do a tournament to crown the inaugural AEW Trios Tag Team Champions until Kenny Omega was back.
Kenny Omega last competed for All Elite Wrestling at this past November’s Full Gear PPV, when he lost the AEW World Title to “Hangman” Adam Page and he has since been out of action as he has had injuries that needed to be surgically repaired such as an arthroscopic knee surgery, which will take around 10 weeks for him to fully recover. Not only is the top AEW Star recovering from the knee surgery, but he was also set to undergo a surgery to repair his sports hernia at the end of April and that would take him around 2 months to recover. Aside from the hernia surgery, the top AEW Star also has other issues he is planning to take care of before he finally makes his return to in-ring action.
