WWE legend John Cena is considered by many as one of the greatest, if not the greatest Superstar ever and his 16 World Championships as well as his more than 20 years on top of the pro wrestling business is concrete proof of that. Cena was last seen on WWE TV on the final episode of WWE SmackDown in 2022 when he teamed up with Kevin Owens to face Undisputed WWE Universal Champion “The Tribal Chief” Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn in Tag Team action, with Cena and Owens walking out of the match as the winners.
It was speculated under Vince McMahon’s regime that WWE was looking to have John Cena wrestle current United States Champion Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39 as the WWE Chairman thought that Theory could be the next John Cena, however with Paul “Triple H” Levesque now in charge of the company’s creative, plans may have changed and we could see Cena face a different WWE Superstar, but both Cena and Austin Theory have expressed interest in wrestling each other. Several months later, there were speculations that Cena will be facing Logan Paul at WrestleMania 39 after both Superstars took to social media and had something to say about the other.
Dave Meltzer reported on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cena is locked in to compete at WrestleMania 39 and his match will be against WWE United States Champion Austin Theory, but there is no word yet on if the WWE United States Championship will be on the line. Cena, who last competed at WWE’s WrestleMania three years ago when he faced Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Fun House Match, is currently filming a movie with Zac Efron in Australia and even though John Cena won’t be appearing on WWE TV as often as he will be needed to build the match up, he will definitely be wrestling at WWE WrestleMania 39.
This is what Dave Meltzer said:
“For WrestleMania, the locked in matches at this point are Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes for the Universal Title, Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley for the SmackDown Women’s Title, Bianca Belair vs. the Chamber winner for the Raw Women’s Title, and John Cena vs. United States Champion Austin Theory. It’s unclear whether the US Title will be on the line.”
